To restore the language to its rightful position and also the dignity and pride of the Assamese, a group of young Assamese students studying in Kolkata took up the cudgels and gave birth to an Assamese literary organization - the Asam Sahitya Sabha in 1917. In a meeting held in Sivasagar Raibahadur Padmanath Gohain Boruah had grace the chair of presidentship. It was the stellar role undertaken by the young brigade of literary workers that includes among others - Laksminath Bezbaruah, Hem Chandra Goswami, Hemchandra Boruah, Gunabhiram Boruah, Chandra Kumar Agarwalla, made the British Administration realize soon the blunder of replacing Assamese with Bengalee as the court language and reinstated Assamese to former status in 1873.
